Key Responsibilities

As Head Stockperson, you will be the operational leader on the ground at Canobie Station. Your key duties will encompass leadership, safety, and hands-on stock work:

  • Lead, mentor, and support the stock camp, fostering a culture of strong communication, safety, and high performance.
  • Train and assess team members using our Operations Skills Framework, ensuring all tasks are completed to standard with appropriate supervision.
  • Role model and enforce strict safety protocols to protect people, livestock, and station assets at all times.
  • Ensure the highest standards of animal welfare in line with industry best practices and AACo policy, and plan/implement effective animal husbandry programs.
  • Manage accurate livestock records using company systems and contribute to herd, pasture, and water management.
  • Oversee general station maintenance and support environmental management initiatives.

Qualifications

To excel in this leadership role, you will need a solid foundation of experience and skills:

  • A minimum of 4 years’ experience as a Station Hand, with at least 2 years in a Leading Hand or Head Stockperson role.
  • Expert cattle handling and horse-riding skills, with the ability to draft cattle to market specifications.
  • Proven experience in cattle herd, pasture, and water management.
  • A strong understanding of general station operations including fencing, machinery, and bore maintenance.
  • Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • A current Driver’s Licence and a Class A B Firearms Licence.
  • Knowledge of LPA and CCQA programs is essential. Experience with livestock recording systems (e.g., Stockmate) and intermediate computer skills are desirable.
